‘Green Delight celebrate the power
of veggies’
Aviko. Where sustainability grows.
Aviko introduced the ‘Green Delight’ in 2023. The vegan snacks product line is already a success and is sold all over the world. The reason is that it meets a clear need: tasty and surprising snacks that are just as good as the traditional bitterbal and, moreover, have a better footprint.
Willem Fijten: ‘We did not try to create meat alternatives but leveraged the power of vegetables. We celebrate veggies! The products were developed in cooperation with chefs and food start-ups. They are successful because we managed to give them a tasty texture and a great mouth sensation in addition to an excellent flavour.’
As regards the Chili Cheezz Nuggets, Aviko uses, among other things, Potato Cheezz: a plant-based alternative to cheese based on potatoes. This innovation is the result of a partnership between Aviko Rixona and the Cosun Innovation Center. The Green Delight series also includes Plant-based Chicken Pops and Cheezz Onion Rings. Willem: ‘The products really are excellent! We regularly hear on panels that tasters do not believe that the snacks are entirely plant-based.’
Plant-based products have a smaller footprint where it concerns energy, CO2 and water consumption. Willem: ‘We work based on the ‘green by design’ principle: we already take account of the sustainability criteria during the innovation process. This is how we align with sustainability projects that are ongoing within our production facilities and we arrange for an efficient production process with a minimal impact. One area in which significant improvements can still be made is at the maker of the products. It is a known fact that most emissions occur at the end of the chain. As a producer we feel the responsibility to inform users properly. We also encourage CO2 reduction on the user side by entering into dialogues and by providing clear final baking and cooking instructions.’
